Science Week

2HB celebrated British Science week.

Visit this website for more information https://www.britishscienceweek.org/

We started off the week by finding out what scientist do, what skills they have and about the different types of scientist there are.

For one of our Google Meets we all took part in a 'LIVE' science experiment. We all had to make sure we had the equipment ready and we all followed the step by step instructions at the same time.

To grow your own Rainbow you will need;

  • Kitchen roll

  • Felt tip pens (Not Sharpies as Mrs Hammond found out!)

  • 2 containers (Tupperware, take away containers or bowls)

  • Some cold water

Make a prediction;

We also made our own predictions and talked about what we thought would happen and how long it would take.

Step 1;

Take your square of kitchen roll and fold it in half to make a rectangle.

Step 2;

Use your felt tip pens to colour in blocks at the end of your kitchen roll. Once you have done one end repeat exactly the same pattern at the other end. Have a look at some of our examples below.

2HB's top tips;

  • Use bright colours

  • Colour all the way up to the very edge of the kitchen roll

  • Don't leave too much white kitchen roll in the middle.

Step 3;

  • Fill both containers with some cold water.

  • Some of us filled them half way, some three quarters and some of us only put a little bit of water in. We talked about how this effected the experiment after.

Step 4;

  • Put each end of the kitchen roll in one container, making an arch between the two (a rainbow shape).

  • Wait and observe.

Look at some of the amazing Rainbows we grew!

Can you use scientific vocabulary to explain what happened?

Throughout the week we also completed lots of other experiments. Have a look at some of them.

We also made our own posters about how to protect our planet. We had lots of ideas.

You can also watch some of our very COOL science week videos!

Could you have a go at some of these at home?
